In September, devastating floods hit the Estes Park area outside of Denver, Colorado where at least 1,918 square miles were affected by property damages totaling nearly $2 billion USD.
To help business owners recover, a team of employees worked with the Estes Park Flood Recovery Mission to clean up the Spruce House, a Christmas Place Shop. The team spent a grueling day shoveling huge volumes of sand and rock away from the parameter of the property and pulling up flood-ruined carpet inside. The Spruce House is a well-known shop in downtown Estes Park, and the impact of the team's efforts was not lost on the locals. “Many visitors and locals stopped to thank us for our work. This project was extremely rewarding!” said Kari Obernesser, market manager. And all the hard work paid off as the Spruce House was able to open by Thanksgiving– another huge accomplishment!
From the Estes Park Christmas Shoppe and Spruce House Facebook page: "This Expedia group was amazing! They came with shovels and never stopped. The front yard looks incredible - the excavator stopped by and was truly impressed with what they had accomplished, he knows how hard the work is! And they kept saying they are desk jocks, but their muscles were bulging. Thank you Expedia team, you are #MountainStrong!
In November, a record-breaking typhoon slammed into the mid-section of the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan had wind gusts of up to 190 miles per hour and a storm surge as high as 16 feet. With thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of people displaced, the devastation was unmistakable.
To help support the relief efforts, Expedia, Inc. donated $25,000 USD to the Red Cross and offered a special 2:1 matching gift for all employees, up to $25,000 USD. In total, employees donated nearly $50,000 USD to the Red Cross, Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), World Vision, and Save the Children - all first-responders to the disaster.
Additionally, Hotels.com websites throughout Asia Pacific posted special banner ads calling for customers to donate to MSF, a first-responder in the area. Our Expedia Media Solutions team offered marketing support for tourism boards and organizations in the destinations affected by Typhoon Haiyan. The 3:1 media dollar match for all advertising on Expedia, Inc. websites was designed to help the disaster-affected regions sustain visibility and boost tourism during the recovery period.
